Update on Barn Project – August 2020

Here’s an update on our exciting project to build a new barn at the farm!

Background

We are planning to build a new Veg Box packing space, and community space at the farm. It will really improve our packing and volunteer facilities, and is needed more than ever with the increase in Veg Box orders we have seen during the pandemic. The project has been generously funded by members of the farm, match funding from Power to Change, and grant funding from The James Trust, Sutton Community Fund, Beddington Community Fund, Elizabeth Creak Charitable Trust, Frank Litchfield Charitable Trust and Rowan Bentall Trust.

Good news!

We had a significant setback last year after the cost estimates from our chosen builder turned out to be very inaccurate. We tried to work with them to get it within budget, but it proved impossible. So we went back to the drawing board and spoke to different contractors. We have been working with Ascot Buildings to find a design which meets our needs and is within budget.

We now have a solution! This building is close to the original design but has been tweaked to fit with Ascot’s building system and to be more standardised and therefore cost effective.

Key features

  • Gravel yard and level wide door access at the back for easy operational access of deliveries leaving and arriving, connected to the existing track
  • Large windows on north side to offer views of farm and skyline
  • Large single space – completely flexible for packing and events
  • Exposed timber frame (much lower embodied carbon than steel frames typically used in barn buildings)

Timeline

There will be 4 building packages:
