Notes from the Field

Basket of calendula

As it’s been such a driech week, weather-wise, here’s a summery image of edible calendula to cheer you up. But don’t let the bright colours fool you – down on the farm, it’s been cold, wet and blowy too. This means everything has metaphorically wrapped up and dozed by the hearth – in practice this means things have just slowed down – things are not ripening quickly this week; the courgettes have slowed down dramatically.

However, thanks to the spectacular summer we’ve had, this won’t stop us having a bountiful Harvest Celebration – that’s coming up this Saturday, so come down and visit your farm and help us celebrate a great growing year.

Meanwhile, we’ve been lucky enough this week to have the help of a big group of volunteers from AIG Insurance – we got them busy making compost and planting out lots of lettuces. We’ve also had a big load of municipal compost delivered to us from Beddington Lane, so once that has dried out a little we’ll be spreading it on the fields to build fertility for next year.
