Farm notes: schools, shop update and toads!

Last week we had 34 children on the farm, coming to learn about food production and getting involved by sowing and potting up our globe artichokes. We had such fun and the children cooked a delicious farm soup. The weather’s definitely warmer now and we’re wearing one less layer as we work outside. There’s lots of germination happening and we’re busy building a new polytunnel to house some of these crops such as aubergines and peppers.

Welcome Robyn!

This week we’re pleased to welcome to the team a new member of staff, Robyn, who will be managing our Sales & Marketing activities; helping people across Sutton know about the farm and especially our VegBoxes.

Sutton School Cook Clubs

Our work with schools is expanding and we’re excited to be working on a new project with Sutton Council to provide after-school cook clubs in primary schools in Sutton. This project will also be bringing a new pop-up stall to the High Street this summer. Stay tuned for more information.

Farm Shop Survey and Competition Winner

We had a whopping 200+ responses to our survey that asked the question: “Should we open a community farm shop and cafe?” Last week we had a meeting and read carefully through the responses which were full of enthusiasm, ideas and support. We decided that the best approach will be to hold a public meeting to explore the idea further. This is a big project and something we can’t do alone. We’ll update you as we make plans.

Congratulations to Imogen Byng who won the competition to win a VegBag, as part of this survey.

Toads…

Over a year ago, with the help of Overton Grange and The Challenge, we dug several small ponds around the farm. Ponds attract a whole new ecosystem of wildlife that improve biodiversity around our farm. Most noticeably, we’ve had more toads. Here’s a couple our volunteer Peggy spotted this morning on the farm:
