Notes from the Field

cherry tomatoes

This week we’ve got the slightly disorientating sight of an empty polytunnel – that’s because we’ve been taking up the last of the cucumbers and a lot of the tomatoes so that we can plant our winter salads, so it’s only a temporary void.

As you know, the weather is always big news in farming, and this prolonged warm start to the autumn has been lovely – and not just because we can have our volunteer Wednesday lunches outside still, but because it’s given us a surprising extra period for our tomatoes, beans and courgettes. So the tastes of summer are still with us into October – lovely.

Also this week we’re giving thought to next year’s rotations. In last week’s NffF we mentioned planting out next year’s garlic as part of our Year 2 rotation – if you’d like to read more about our plans and about the principle of crop rotation, have a look at our farm design page.
