Notes from the Field

inside-the-polytunnel

This week we’re going to be planting up our mandala raised bed with herbs, including rosemary, thyme, sage and oregano. This is our first punt into bouquet garni (that’s a posh way of saying a “bundle of herbs”) growing and eventually they’ll find their way into our VegBoxes and to some of the restaurants we supply. A portion of each arm of the mandala will be left and used to reflect our farm’s crop rotation but on a smaller scale, so that we can use it as a demonstration bed. Our inner polytunnel is bursting with sowed salad seeds and brassicas including summer cabbages, brussels sprouts and rainbow chard.

perma-sketchOn Saturday, we hosted a PDC group from Social Landscapes who were interested in urban growing initiatives and how the principles of permaculture can be applied in a broader scale. Whilst they were here they tested our soil, created designs using the permaculture principles and did some composting. If you’re interested in learning more about permaculture, why not take part in an introductory course here at the farm. For more information click here.
