Notes from the Field

Squashes

The weather’s been getting rather cold and damp lately. In the midst of drizzle and wind, we’ve been harvesting about a ton of squashes – but that raises a real headscratcher… where to put a ton of squashes to cure, in a safe spot when the weather’s getting a bit autumnal. Safe from nasty old Jack Frost, that’s who.

If they’re touched by his icy fingers, they simply won’t store very well. And we definitely want to make sure you have something to carve come Hallowe’en! So the hunt is on, here, for nice frost-free safehouses to harbour our squashes until they make it into your VegBags.

Head Grower Joris also reports this week feeling a twinge of sadness at taking up the last of the tomatoes. It really is Goodbye, Summer, I’m afraid. And he says it truly is the last, this week, of our pretty astonishing courgette crop. But don’t let it get you down, because it’s soon going to be stir fry season: the oriental brassicas are looking great.
