Notes from the Field

bean-polesWe’ve been able to get a lot done last week, thanks to some excellent weather and a host of enthusiastic volunteers throughout the week and over the weekend. We’ve planted out all our climbing beans (over 3000 plants!) and erected both bamboo and steel structures for them to ascend when they’re ready. These make for a beautiful view from the VegShed, as they sit in the foreground of London’s gleaming skyline. We’ve also been welcoming our first tomatoes, which are rapidly appearing on the plants… Spring has well and truly sprung!

peppersThis week we’ll be planting all our courgettes and getting the rest of out tomatoes into the ground in the polytunnels, along with our peppers and cucumbers. Our wild rocket has succumbed to an attack of flea beetle, so whilst it’s perfectly edible and full of flavour, its appearance is peppered with beetle bites. Our kales are doing very well under the nets and our dwarf beans in the neighbouring bed are happy and healthy.

This bank holiday Monday, you’ll find us at the Cheam Fair at the Cheam Recreation Ground (off Malden Road) from 12 – 4pm. If you see us, please come and say hello!
