Volunteers are at the heart of our community, helping create a beautiful farm that makes a real change to local, sustainable food. Volunteers come to the farm to develop their skills, get exercise and make friends – volunteers are also welcome to take a share in the harvest. Here’s some of the activities volunteers are needed for. Please contact us if you are interested in helping out. We can be flexible with your availability, however, we do ask volunteers to try and commit to regular volunteering hours. This is better for the volunteers and for us so we can schedule activities.
On the farm
Growers (Monday-Saturday, 9am-5pm)
Examples of activities include sowing, planting out, weeding, preparing beds, helping design our rotations. Perfect for people who want to develop farming knowledge and skills.
Packers (Thursday 8am-11am)
Each week we pack more than 150 VegBags for the local community. This work involves weighing vegetables and packing them.
Sign makers (Monday-Saturday, 9am-5pm)
We have very little signage around the site. This activity involves painting signs to help visitors identify vegetables, beds and orientate themselves.
Site infrastructure team (Monday-Saturday, 9am-5pm)
Maintenance and building projects such as painting, plumbing, making paths, installing raised beds, improving rainwater collection and making biodiversity habitats.
Marketing and communications
Digital marketing (anytime)
If you’re an expert in online marketing we’d love to hear from you. Help us help our website and our VegBox Scheme reach as many people as possible through targeted online campaigns.
Leaflet distribution (Monday-Saturday, 9am-5pm)
Help the farm raise its profile by distributing leaflets in the local community. Start with your own road or an event you’re attending. We’re open to suggestions so please get in touch.
Markets and stalls (some Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays)
If you love interacting with the public and engaging directly in the local community then come and help us promote the farm on one of our stalls at farmer’s markets and produce fairs in the area. Help us explain our farm’s ethos to curious customers and sign people up to the VegBox Scheme.
Web SEO and site development (anytime)
We have a nice new website, but now we need to make sure it makes an impact. Suitable for someone based at home.
VegBox pick-up storage design (anytime)
Half of our customers receive their Vegboxes from a pickup point. We have more than 20 pickup points, some are offices and some are public spaces. We are interested in developing a storage solution for our bags so they are presented well, keep cool and promote themselves to passers by. This is a perfect project for a product designer. We can set aside budget for materials, but ideally we would like to reuse materials.
Administration and strategy
Book keeping support (Fridays)
Each week we undertake basic book keeping, making sure we keep track of our expenditures and income. Support with this task would be very beneficial. Good for a committed volunteer with book keeping experience.
Supporting fundraising pitches (anytime)
Helping put together projects that achieve our aims as a farm. For example, a network of cooking heroes, a competition or school vegclub scheme. This is suitable for someone with proven experience in writing and strategy.
