Herb Infusion: Spring planting for herbal teas

Jenny Harper is the Founder of Herb Infusion Co, a new enterprise that makes healthy and tasty teas from quality dried herbs for people and businesses. The teas are sold as simple dried herbs or pre-mixed herb tea blends. In this blog, Jenny writes about Spring planting:

Preparing soil and planting seeds at the farm is an absolute delight for me as the weather hints at warming up at last.

I have chosen (at last!) a fine selection of herbs to grow for my tea blends. These include Roman chamomile, bergamot, wild strawberry, anise hyssop and my personal favourite the delightful tri-coloured violet, heartsease.  The seeds have mostly been ordered from Poyntzfield nurseries up in Invernesshire – a beautiful, organic and remote nursery that is a favourite supplier to medicinal herbal growers, as the quality of stock is renowned.  The post goes out once a week from Poyntzfield, so I had a couple of delays, but as of today the seeds are all planted in successions since the middle of February.

The simple joy of seeing germination occur is not to be underestimated and I am getting ready in the next week to transplant some of the seedlings to small pots…

Otherwise activity is very much in the FarmStart polytunnel itself: marking out the space: two 9m x 1m rows plus a 9m x 30cm side row and lightly turning the top soil and raking over with fine compost ready for planting out the herbs.

The next step is to construct some drying racks ready for spreading out soon to be foraged common and native spring herbs that are growing quite rapidly now – nettle, dandelion and chickweed. These herbs provide a really green and vital taste to some of the tea blends indicating their high nutritional value.
